As a rule, you never should modify your file registry manually, because the process is complicated, tedious, and exceptionally difficult. Even people with advanced degrees in information technology typically do not venture into their file registries except in the most extreme emergencies. The rule applies especially to font entries, because they influence the operation of all your important software. Consider the logic: If a program cannot recognize the font in which a document is written, it cannot read the document. Result: fail.
The DOs and DON’Ts of Font Entries
Under normal circumstances, you never will have an occasion to go through your file registry looking for or changing specific font entries. Stored in your file registry as “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts,” this file contains the data for all the fonts currently installed on your machine. Originally, all the fonts available for your use were installed with your operating system; and, even if you have updated or upgraded your operating system from your first version of Windows, all the original fonts probably still work. If you have downloaded fonts from the internet, the installation wizards have added their essential codes to your file registry in order for them to work in your documents, too.
Problems arise only when you move or delete a font using any program except Windows Explorer. When you complete the change or deletion, the registry entry for the font remains but contains no data. The CPU reads the font entry as invalid, and the error sometimes will freeze the application that still contains the empty font file.
Naturally, in order to fix the problem, you want to remove the invalid font entries. Whereas you may go into the file registry, trying again to delete the files manually, you run the risk of causing more damage without accomplishing your goal. The operation is especially risky because the font may appear in several different locations, and a simple search will not clearly indicate which files are invalid.
