What are COM/ActiveX Entries?

If you frequently download data and applications from the internet, especially if you frequently download games, old and damaged Active X files may be contributing to your PC’s slow and sluggish performance. You never will launch the first salvo in “Counter Strike” if obsolete Active X entries are putting a drag on your CPU. Regular use of RegCure will clear obsolete, fragmented, unused, or irrelevant Active X controls from your registry, helping your PC run at its peak.

In the simplest possible terms, Active X empowers your PC to walk and chew gum at the same time, all in synch. Active X is Microsoft’s combination of programming tools and controls for building-in extra functionality and inter-activity with both web pages and applications. Active X does not drive multi-tasking; instead, it drives multi-functioning within a single document.

You seldom see “COM” in file keys any more, but COM remains in the computer programmers’ vernacular almost as an eponym—a way of referring to a whole class of tools with which designers create objects for use in different environments and across the standard boundaries among different machines. Active X controls run on web pages regardless of the language in which they were created.

Active X in Ordinary Use

When you scan and repair your file registry, you will see both Active X controls and Active X documents. The Active X controls make the pages exciting; the Active X documents are the pages themselves.

Embedded into web pages because they are compatible with all current mounting and structural mark-up languages, Active X entries control pop-up messages, play videos, add sound, and enable you to click on an image to connect with more information. Active X documents perform multi-functions as you view them, and many Windows applications—most notably Windows media player, Microsoft Visual Studio, and Internet Explorer—depend on Active X controls for the operation of their special features.

Because Active X controls transform your favourite web pages from static documents to engaging, inter-active, multi-media wonderlands, you depend on them more than you know. But Active X controls are not automatically and inevitably your friends, because they also drive the internet’s most sophisticated, most malicious spyware and malware.

More than ever, you must exercise tremendous caution as you download new programs and applications to your computer, accepting files only from sites you know and trust. You also must keep your security software up to date, and you regularly should run your RegCure program to eliminate foreign, intrusive, or obsolete Active X documents and controls.
